"Noisy, but in a good way!"
Sarah’s been running the Youth Club for more than three years now, and has got to know many young people in the parish. “We welcome all young people from 10 to 16 years, and I often meet past members when I’m out and about. It’s good to see what amazing adults they’ve become.”
The Youth Club runs one Friday every month, starting at 7pm and finishing at 9pm for younger members, with those who are 13 plus staying till 9.30pm. In the past, club members have taken part in many different activities, but unlike school, there is always the option to do something else.
Sarah reminds us that young people need to make their own decisions about what to do, rather than being guided from one activity to the next. If they are interested in cooking, or sports, or craft or drama that’s good; all have featured in Youth Club programmes. “It’s really nice for them to be part of the community,” says Sarah, “they have even had the chance to ring the church bells.”
Although the Youth Club has a Christian ethos, the membership is diverse and all are welcome. “Our young people have shown themselves to be really big-hearted, not only by raising funds for charity but also showing us that they care and are thinking about problems globally, not just in the local context.”
Young people are our hope for the future, and if the members of the Youth Club are typical – as we are sure they are – we will all be in safe hands.
