Baptisms

St Mary’s is very pleased to welcome everyone who wishes their children to begin their Christian journey by baptism.

There is no age limit (upper or lower) - we welcome all ages - infants, older children and adults.

We are delighted to offer baptism to anyone who has or has had a connection with St Mary’s Church or our parish. The promises that parents and godparents make in the service are detailed here, and in the link below.

When do Baptisms take place

Most baptisms take place during our Sunday 10am Eucharist when the congregation is present to extend its welcome. By mutual arrangement, it is possible for a baptism to be held at 11.45am some Sundays.

How to proceed

Please contact the Parish Administrator, Michael Brunt, to discuss available dates and any questions you may have.  Please also download and complete the application form (see link below) with your details and return (either electronically or via hard copy).  When a date is agreed, a letter of confirmation will be sent out, along with the invoice and payment details.

‘Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptising them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit’.  Matthew 28:19

Choosing godparents

By tradition three godparents are chosen, two of the same gender and one of the opposite and they should all be baptised themselves. If not baptised, then one godparent may be substituted by a sponsor.

Adult Baptism

We warmly welcome adult candidates for baptism which is invariably the first step to Confirmation, a service at which the Bishop presides. The Vicar will be happy to discuss this with you.

Donations

There is a small fee for the Baptism certificate and godparents’ cards but we offer the sacrament of baptism free of charge. There is also a fee for the organist at the 11.15 Baptism. However, we are very grateful for donations to help us maintain this ancient building, now over 900 years old, and to support the work of the Church in this parish. Thank you for your generosity.

Confirmation

Confirmation is usually celebrated from the age of 11, which complements the sacrament of baptism and provides the route to regularly receiving holy communion. Young people or adults will be prepared in groups, led by the clergy.

Confirmation services take place either at St Mary’s or another local church within our deanery or sometimes at Southwark Cathedral. Adults who have not previously been baptised will be prepared for Baptism and Confirmation together.

To enquire further about Confirmation preparation, please email the Vicar at vicar@stmarysmerton.org.uk
